Establishing the foundation for progress as a musician Technique Bowing Position changes Aspects or working on technique Daily practice Maintaining flexibility Tempo Identifying difficulties Synchronisation or the hands Playing with the left thumb Choosing the right fingering Scales, arpeggios and double-stopping Interpretation and tradition List or recordingsThis volume is dedicated to all those who wish to learn or to perfect the art or playing the cello, whatever their age. It has often been suggested to me that I should bring together the fruits or my many years experience as a teacher and as a cellist in the form or a book for publication. I hope this work will find favour with all those who love this fine instrument and who wish to share their enjoyment with others.
In these chapters I have attempted to fill the gaps that I have found in some Cello tutor books and I have done my best to provide clear and simple advice. All the examples given should be practice carefully and with the help or a metronome. Or course this will try the students patience severely, at least at the out set. Studying the works I recommend in this volume will nevertheless repay the effort involved, for all my examples are drawn from major works in the cello repertoire. I do not believe that absolute perfection can be attended; striving towards it, however, can and should be our lifting aim. I recall the wonderful saying or Buffon: Genius consists in endless patience (Le génie est une longue patience).
